Bowie Junior High Boy’s Physical Education & Health
In Physical Education, students acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and access to a physically-active lifestyle. The student exhibits a physically-active lifestyle and understands the relationship between physical activity and health throughout the life span. In Grades 6-8, students understand in greater detail the function of the body, learn to measure their own performance more accurately, and develop plans for improvement. They learn to use technology such as heart rate monitors to assist in measuring and monitoring their own performance. Identifying the types of activities that provide them with enjoyment and challenge and that will encourage them to be physically active throughout life is reinforced during instruction in these grades. It is very important that students come to class prepared in workout clothes. Students will be issued lockers as well to keep things. Each student needs to bring deodorant to keep in their locker or school bag.
Below is a typical “week at a glance” for BJH PE & Health.
Monday- Circuit Training
We will use programs such as “Tabata” for circuit exercises. There will be 4 to 6 different body exercises that students will perform throughout the workout. All exercises are led by a coach and will not involve any weights whatsoever.
Tuesday- Skills Day
We will practice different skills from a variety of sports across the year. For example in football season we will practice catching and throwing drills. We will practice skills in all sports including Football, Basketball, Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Hockey, Badminton, Volleyball, and Soccer.
Every Wednesday, we will have our health day. Health lessons vary weekly and emphasis the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Thursday- Cardio Day
We will perform several different games that focus on improving running form and stamina. This might be done by games involving running, team relay races, and obstacle courses.
Friday- Game day
Fridays are game day and we will play a series of fun games that target to improve team building, and collaboration.
Each exercise in a given Tabata workout lasts only four minutes. Tabata workouts will be used as bell ringer activities on Mondays & Thursdays. The structure of the program is as follows:
Work out hard for 20 seconds
Rest for 10 seconds
Complete 8 rounds
An example of a Tabata workout looks like this:
Push-ups (4 minutes)
Bodyweight Squats (4 minutes)
Burpees (4 minutes)
Mountain Climbers (4 minutes)
